Archaeological Museum of Epidaurus

The world-famous Sanctuary of Asclepius at Epidaurus, an UNESCO World Heritage site, is of course accompanied by the museum with the findings of many years of excavations. They helped us better understand the cult of Asclepius, the god of mental and physical treatment, dating back from archaic to Roman times.

The museum is located within the world-famous archaeological site of the Sanctuary of Asclepius at Epidaurus, an UNESCO World Heritage site, hosting findings of many years of excavations. They helped us better understand the cult of Asclepius, the god of mental and physical treatment, and the evolution of medicine in the sanctuary, as well. They date back from archaic to Roman times. 

The museum collections include a lot of mobile findings and architectural members from important buildings that you’ll see at the archaeological site. Among others, you’ll admire the inscribed columns, altars, medical tools, votive sculptures, inscriptions, and representations of the sanctuary of Asclepius. You will also admire the inscription with the hymn to Apollo and Asclepius by poet Isyllus (circa 280 BC). 

In the second hall, there are plaster copies of works exhibited at the National Archaeological Museum, such as statues of Asclepius, Hygieia and armed Aphrodite.  

The museum was founded in 1897 by the Archaeological Society, and opened in 1909. The exhibitions fully expresses the museum practice of the early 20th century, characterized by a tight arrangement of the exhibits because of their multitude.
