The port of Gerakas

Nature has blessed this little port on the east coast of Laconia with fjord, which remind us of Scandinavia. Ancient Greeks also gifted it with the fortified city of Zarakas, most likely built in the Hellenistic era (3rd century BC).

Nature has blessed this little port on the east coast of Laconia with fjord, which remind us of Scandinavia, especially when the sky is filled with leaden clouds. 

Ancient Greeks also gifted it with the city of Zarakas, most likely built in the Hellenistic era (3rd century BC). The archaeological site lies on a hill above the port, and the fortifications protecting the city are well preserved.

According to ancient Greek traveller Pausanias, it was named after the Lacedaemonian hero Zarekas, who founded it between 1300 and 1200 BC. Pausanias also mentions a temple of Apollo, with a cult statue. 

Now that you are familiar with its history, you can enjoy what the beautiful fishing village has to offer, which is mentioned in maps as Port of Ierakas: the majestic scenery, which is really inspiring, the fresh fish and the traditional dishes, which you can taste at the few tavernas by the sea. And the nice images the village offers, with the whitewashed houses and the colourful doors and shutters, bringing the Greek islands to mind. 

Protected from the winds, hidden as it is in the cove, the port is a good docking spot for small sailboats and fishing boats.  

The port is 22 km away from Monemvasia.
