Built on caves, the small village of Trachila will impress you with its stone-built houses, wreathing the bay with the shiny emerald waters and the beautiful rocks. At a stone’s throw lies Katafygi, with its natural “platforms” in tiers, and its cave.
The emerald waters shines before the stone-built houses of Trachila, with clay roof tiles, which form a wreath around the sea. “What a nice village”, is what you’ll definitely say, when you see it from above, as it is built in its small cove, surrounded by lush scenery.
This coastal settlement of southern Mani has very few permanent inhabitants, and it comes to life in summer. The region where it is located, is first mentioned in a document of 1700, and it is famous for its caves - Trachila is built on them, anyway. Diving into a cave in the afternoon, you’ll experience something unique: the refracted sunrays create magnificent patterns in the water, in all shades of blue.
At a stone’s throw away from Trachila lies a very impressive attraction of Messinia. It’s Katafygi, with its natural “platforms” in tiers, which end above sea level. When great waves besiege them, it is an awe-inspiring spectacle. Nearby lies the cave of the same name, an even more remarkable natural creation, with a plethora of stalactite formations.
Near the village, you will also find the beaches Pantazi and Chalikoura.
If you spend your holiday in Trachila, you’ll see and capture the old ladies that keep the tradition of manual salt harvesting on the rocks. The salt forms in a natural way, when the sun vaporizes sea water, and it is of very good quality.
It is 17 km away from Kardamyli and 55 km away from Kalamata.
