This extraordinary museum is integrated into the archaeological site and contains a total of 2,500 finds from excavations carried out in Mycenae and the surrounding area since the end of the 19th century.
The museum is located on the northern foothills of the rock of the acropolis, extends over 2,000 square meters and the exhibition spaces occupy 380 square meters. A museological and museographic study was carried out from 1998 until its inauguration in 2003, resulting to a new and modern approach. Its integration into the archaeological site also determined the presentation of the finds, so that they follow the topographical layout of the sites in which they were discovered.
The museum contains a total of 2,500 finds from excavations carried out in Mycenae and the surrounding area since the end of the 19th century.
These are not artifacts representing the glorious era of the early rulers -including the famous "Agamemnon's mask" from the Tomb Circle A and other important finds from the Religious Centre of the Acropolis of Mycenae. These have remained in the National Archaeological Museum of Athens as part of the Collection of Mycenaean Antiquities.
In the Archaeological Museum of Mycenae, you will admire exhibits related to the everyday life of the Mycenaeans -mainly clay artifacts, goldsmithing, metalworking, stone carving.
There are 4 exhibition halls in two levels. On the upper one, where visit begins and concludes, you will enjoy a wonderful view of the archaeological site.
In the first hall there are collections relevant to the public and private activities of the Mycenaeans. A ramp leads to the second level with finds from the Royal Tomb Circle B, the chamber tombs and historical copies of the grave goods of the Royal Circle A. This is followed by sections on Mycenae in Historic times and a presentation of the achievements of Mycenaean civilization.
