It was founded as part of the excavation program of University of California, Berkeley in Ancient Nemea, , funded by Rudolph A. Peterson. Initially, it served the research and educational purposes of the excavation program at the Temple of Zeus. In 1984, it was donated to the Greek state, when it opened its doors to visitors.
The findings from the Temple of Zeus form the biggest part of the exhibition. You’ll see architectural members, a collection of objects associated with sport and cult activities in Nemea, sculptures, coins and inscriptions, indicating that ancient travellers had stopped by. Furthermore, lithographies, sketches and photos of travellers of the 18th and 20th century. The museum’s collections include prehistoric findings (ceramics, tools, weapons, etc.) from prehistoric locations in the area.
