Its great collections are worth seeing, even if you are on a short visit to Nauplion. The former Peloponnesian Folklore Foundation B. Papantoniou -today Basil Papantoniou Foundation- was founded in 1974. It bears the personal seal of costumer and scenographer Ioanna Papantoniou, who runs it in her father’s memory. The foundation aims at “the research, documentation, study, preservation and dissemination of Modern Greek and global culture.”
The permanent exhibition includes about 50,000 artefacts, most of which date back to the late 19th-early 20th century AD. You will see an impressive collection of costumes, toys from all over the world, jewellery, paintings, as well as engravings. The very interesting exhibition of costumes and accessories is constantly enriched.
All fashion collections of Giannis Tseklenis, the dolls of F. Kaze, dressed in traditional costumes, the G. Metsis Archive, and the T. Mavros historical archive have been donated to the Foundation. In October 1989, the Foundation inaugurated the “Station”, the first Childhood Museum, at the city’s old railway station.
In 1981, Basil Papantoniou Foundation (BPF) won the European Museum of the Year Award for its exhibition dedicated to the production, processing and use of natural fibres in Greece.
