There are more than 43 km of beaches around Gytheio! So no matter whether you are looking for beach bars and cafes or whether you want a bit more privacy, you are spoilt for choice. And wherever you decide to go, the blue-green crystal clear waters of the Peloponnese are waiting for you.
TO THE SOUTH
Mavrovouni. Near Mavrovouni village, just south of Gytheio, you’ll find one the biggest and most beautiful beaches in Laconia. One part is an organized tourist beach with beach bars and restaurants and the whole beach has lovely golden sand and beautiful sea. Despite being a popular choice, it never looks full. You can also do water sports here.
Vathi Ageranou. A fork in the road after Mavrovouni leads to this long sandy beach which is surrounded by trees. Part of it is an organized beach and you will find facilities for water sports.
Kamares. A long sandy beach in Kato Vathi Bay. On the way you drive through a road lined with olive trees, poplars and eucalyptus trees.
Vordona (Skoutari). There is a signpost to guide you to this small clean beach with fine sand. You can also see the historic church of Agia Varvara.
TO THE NORTH EAST
Selinitsa. One kilometer north of Gytheio, this a huge beach which is a favourite with locals and is ideal for families.
Valtaki-Glyfada. The “trademark” of this long sandy beach is a rusty merchant ship that ran aground here over 40 years ago. The "Dimitrios" (formerly Klintholm) was built in 1950 and had a capacity of 965 tons and a length of 67 meters. On December 4, 1980, it made an emergency voyage to Gytheio and remained tied up in the port. During a severe storm in 1981, the ship broke loose, drifted offshore, and eventually ran aground where you see it today, at Valtaki. It was abandoned and has now become an attraction!
Trinisa. If you leave the village of Skala and head to Trinisa you’ll find small sandy coves with crystal clear waters. These beaches are somewhat “off the beaten track” so you can relax away from the crowds and enjoy the views of the uninhabited wooded Trinisa islets where the endemic manusia grows. You can swim over to the islands as the sea is shallow at this point.
See the rest of the beaches in Mesa Mani and the beaches near Kardamyli.
