A really impressive museum with four thematic sections, shared between the west and southwest wing of the Barracks of Kapodistrias, in the heart of the city of Argos. The complex has been declared a landmark. It was built in 1700 and its construction was completed between 1828-29 by order of Ioannis Kapodistrias, so that the infanrty could be housed there.
From 1989 onwards, the Byzantine Museum of Argolis is housed in the iconic buildings. The permanent exhibition was created between 2011-16, including ceramics, sculptures, coins, mosaics, etc., from excavations in the city of Argos. Exhibits have been collected from elsewhere, too.
The tour begins at the ground floor of the west wing, with a presentation of the history of the building complex and information on the excavations that brought the Byzantine findings into light.
Next, you’ll see the four main exhibition sections.
The first is called “An empire is born”. The main exhibit is a representation of the chancel of early Byzantine basilicas.
The second section concerns the transition from the Middle Ages, from the 7th to the mid-9th century, with exhibits, such as the hoard of coins from Argos, stamps, etc. Very impressive are the findings from the cave of Andritsa.
The third, and principal, section, is entitled “The Middle-Byzantine Argolis”. It is about the Middle Ages and the agora in Byzantine Argolis, with exhibits from various occupations of the time.
The third section, named “Argolis, crossroads of civilisations”, focuses on the coexistence of different civilisations in the area.
Educational programmes are also organised, as well as cultural events and temporary exhibitions.
