As its name suggests, (elato is Greek for fir tree) this is the place to take a deep breath and relish the scented air of the pine forests. It is popular with hikers as it is a stopping point between section two (Vytina – Elati) and section three (Elati to Zygovisi) of the Menalon Trail. It is a small, traditional style village, set 1200m above sea level in the western Menalon mountains, so on the way here you drive through a spectacular mountain landscape.
It was once called Garzeniko, which in Slavic means "city of the forest". The small villages of Pyrgaki and Methydrio are close by.
Wood Carving. If you are looking for an unusual souvenir or if you just want to get a better feel for life in the village, you can visit woodcarver Christos Simopoulos’ workshop just outside the village. The workshop was once a sawmill, and you’ll find that it is full of projects, woodcarving tools and raw materials such as intriguingly-shaped branches and roots from cedars, oaks and maples. The woodcarver has a special permit so he can collect wood that sparks his interest when he is walking in the forests surrounding the village. Each piece of wood is unique, and each piece gives him a unique inspiration so that he can go on to create the furniture, lighting and ornaments that you will see in the workshop. He is a great nature-lover and an animal lover, and as well as woodcarving he also finds time to look after all his horses and donkeys. As he says, "I don't want to become a great artist, my goal is to live close to nature."
