Fishing boats and yachts, traditional Maniot cuisine, fresh fish and gourmet dishes. Rooms for rent and boutique hotels. Stone buildings by the sea. Clear blue-green waters and a sunlight that somehow seems brighter here.
If you’ve been to Sicily you might find Gerolimenas a little familiar – it has the look of a Sicilian village and it’s even on the same latitude as Sicily! You could gaze for hours at the sea and the Cavo Grosso cliffs - especially at dawn when everything is covered in a pink light.
Gerolimenas combines authenticity with modern tourism infrastructure – a rare but wonderful mix. Its name probably means "Sacred Harbour" and it is very likely that the ancient town Hippola was built here. It’s also got an unusual history for a Maniot village. At the end of the 19th century it was an important transit centre where goods left the Mani on their way to be sold abroad. In fact, in 1875, the steamship that travelled on the Kalamata-Piraeus line docked there when it made its first trip to Mani.
Did you know that
