Katafygi beach and cave

With its flat, in tiers, stone plates above sea level, and the crystal clear waters, Katafygi stands out on the coastline of Messinia. The cave of the same name lies in close proximity.

The natural “platforms” in tiers, ending underwater, have created one of the most impressive landscapes of Messinia. They get “charged” with sunlight and in the evening they remain warm - a proper shelter for those wanting to lie down and watch the full moon, or sleep there!

Nearby lies the cave of the same name, an even more remarkable natural creation. In 1953, the founder of speleology in Greece, Giannis Petrocheilos, together with Swedish biospeleologist Lindberg, explored a large part of the cave. I. Ioannou continued their research, a researcher speleologist and member of the Hellenic Speleological Society. According to him, its entrance is magnificent. It is the exit of an underground river, which, over the centuries, flattened out the rocks, the limestones and the marbles, forming an “amphitheatre” of rare beauty on the coast.

The adits of the cave extend over 900 m. However, it is estimated that, overall, they reach 1600 m. The central room is richly decorated by stalactite formations. It is very large, and there is an upper floor.

The cave has not been utilised. The route to its entrance, which closes with a door, goes over the rocks of the coastline (about 1 hour).

Close to Katafygi lies the beautiful settlement of Trachila, which is worth visiting.
