The largest settlement in eastern Mani combines the wildness of the famous Maniot landscape and traditional architecture, with the crystal clear waters of a peaceful bay.
The calm dark blue waters of the sheltered bay makes for a perfect contrast with the wild and barren Maniot landscape. Kotronas is the largest settlement in eastern Mani, and it’s a good place for a stroll along the narrow streets with their traditional Maniot houses and churches. Keep an eye out for Agios Nikolaos which is thought to date from the 9th century, and Ypapanti church. And then when the sun’s not quite so hot, you can fit in a bit of sunbathing or swimming at the beach.
It is though that the ancient city of Teuthroni was built here. However there was a huge earthquake in the 3rd century and Teuthroni was swallowed up by the sea. Fishermen and divers accidentally discovered some of the ruins of the city near Skopa peninsula, along with various finds such as obsidian. Also, stones and other architectural elements have been used for building the churches and housing in the village.
A small strip of land connects Kotronas with the forested Skopa peninsula - or Nisaki as the locals call it - with its large pebbles and “double” beach. There are other beautiful beaches within easy reach, such as Sykia, Pera Ammos which is just a short walk away, and Chalikia Vatta (a short way to the west of the village), with coarse white pebbles and crystal-clear cool waters
There are plenty of nice guest houses to stay in Kotronas, and lots of tavernas where you can enjoy fresh fish and traditional Maniot recipes.
