This seaside town with a long history lies at the head of the bay between Elafonisos and Cape Malea. Stroll for hours along its coastal promenade and narrow streets, as well as on its large, landscaped beach. Its two museums - Archaeological and Maritime - are well worth a visit.
This seaside town is built at the head of the bay between Elafonisos and Cape Malea. From its port, you can reach Elafonisos and Kythera.
Neapolis is built amphitheatrically on two hills - Agia Triada and Vrontas. The sandy, Blue Flag beach is lined by a street of cafés, bars and restaurants. It's a pleasant place to stroll, especially at dusk.
Although Neapolis was only built after 1837, its history goes back many centuries, as evidenced by the findings of the ancient city near the present-day town. The fortress of Agia Paraskevi, just outside the town, underlines the historical continuity of the area. The maritime tradition is symbolized by the statue of the sailor Vatikiotis, on the beach road.
Along the way, you'll come across the metropolitan churches of Agia Triada and Agios Nikolaos. You can also visit the very interesting Voies Archaeological Museum, where sculptures, inscriptions, tombstones and vases are on display. Its main exhibit is the archaeological collection of Neapolis, to which pieces from other areas of the province of Epidaurus Limera have been included, which is almost geographically identical to the Malea peninsula. The exhibition space reproduces the contours of the Kavomalia peninsula and retraces the journey of an ancient traveller (www.amnv.gr). The Maritime Museum is also very remarkable (www.keppedm.gr/nautical-museum).
In the settlement you will find several hotels, cafes, restaurants and shops.
A look back at history. The ancient city was founded between 1050 B.C. and 950 B.C. by Heraklides Boias and belonged to the Community of Eleutherolacones. According to legend, the goddess Artemis sent a rabbit to indicate the site where the city was to be built. In Roman times, the city was a prosperous trading port.
