At the end of May the Palaiologia Festival is held here, with religious and cultural events in honour of the last Byzantine Emperor. The famous Mystras Fair. This is literally an age-old tradition as it is said to have been established many centuries ago by the Byzantine Krevvatadis family. During Turkish rule, it was one of the most important trade fairs in Morea, with products from as far afield as Constantinople and the Black Sea being sold at the fair. Everyone in the area waited for the fair to open so they could buy whatever they needed -housewives filled up their daughters' hope chests, Ottoman pashas bought clothes for their harems, farmers and craftsmen bought their drill cotton trousers, wooden clogs and working boots and the drovers bought new animals. The festival continues to this day from August 26 to September 2 at the boundaries of the Mystras archaeological site. It is a large festival and has a good choice of leisure and entertainment for young and old alike, and a huge range of products on sale.
