Are you ready to explore a World War II shipwreck in tropical waters simply by snorkelling? Τhe Proti island is your first choice. “Proti” means first, and the legend says it was named after Proteus, the son of Poseidon.
A Greek merchant ship was sunk in 1940 at Vourlia beach, the only one on the island, when Italian forces torched it, mistaking it for a warship. A little further offshore from Vourlia beach, at 40 metres depth, sits a wooden shipwreck of the same era. Ask the boat captain that will take you from Marathos to the island to show it to you. The waters are so clear that you can see the shipwreck from the boat, but you can also go snorkeling if you feel more adventurous.

The Proti island is shaped like a crocodile, hence the version of Proteus, who transformed into an animal when he was angry. At the top, there are Mycenaean walls. Start hiking via the well-preserved path and look further up for the monastery of Panagia Gorgopigi, offering you a fantastic view.
