Foinikounta, one of the most famous summer resorts in Messinia, lies between Methoni and Koroni. The settlement, with the small port with swaying fishing boats, the organised sandy beach, and the good facilities, faces the Messinian Oinousses: Schiza, Sapienza, Venetiko and their islets.
When temperature sinks, on the main alley in Foinikounta, people swarm towards the shops and restaurants, tavernas, cafés and bars, all facing the square.
Foinikounta is built in a place of historical significance, where, according to some researchers, Phoenicians founded a settlement, when they settled the coastal area of the Peloponnese. However, this view is disputed. Ancient Greek traveller Pausanias, mentions a settlement after Akritas Cape, named Foinikous Port.
The small fishing village was built in the 1840s by the inhabitants of Lachanada, who arrived from Crete as refugees. Originally, it was named “Taverna” (for obvious reasons), in 1928 it was renamed Paralia of Lachanada, and since 1930 it is called Foinikounta.
Its development as a summer resort began a few decades ago. From 2000 onwards and until thenew highway connecting Methoni with Koroni was constructed, it became easily accessible, and evolved into a popular holiday destination. A contributing factor to this is the large sandy, partly organised Mavrovouni beach to the west, which is one of the most beautiful beaches in Messinia. In the area, there are also camping facilities by the sea.
