Northwest of Porto Heli, in the cove of the Gulf of Ververonda, lies the homonymous lagoon surrounded by greenery and always has calm waters. The local ski school has been based there since 1982. The chapel of Panagitsa adds a nice touch to the beautiful landscape. On the strip of land that separates the lagoon from the open sea is a beach and the waters are ideal for snorkelling.
In the beginning of the 19th century the lagoon was basically a fish farm and was an important source of income for the locals until the end of the 1960s when tourism became more popular. The water and the temperature are ideal for various types of fish - fishing is prohibited though.
The most likely source for the lagoon’s name is that it comes from the wild bush that grows in the area and belongs to the Berberidaceae family. The more interesting and widely-held idea that it was named Ververonda because the bay served as a stronghold for Barbary pirates (ververinoi in Greek) does not seem to be historically accurate.
The Ververonda lagoon has been included in the CORINE biotopes project (a database which aims to conserve nature and wildlife in the EU).
