In the southeast part of the Peloponnese lies the region where wines are produced with Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) of Laconia. Wineries open to visitors you’ll find mainly in the region of Monemvasia, where Monemvasia-Malvasia wines were recognised in 2010 as products with a protected designation of origin (PDO), and are produced again.
The vines have been cultivated in the region of Laconia since Antiquity, thanks to the rugged terrain, with valleys and meadows in hilly and mountainous regions. Viticulture is an important part of local economy, even though it does not concern mainly the standardisation and bottling. Nevertheless, nowadays, with organic farming gaining steadily ground, various wine varieties are produced, with remarkable distinctions.

In the vineyards of Laconia, Greek and rare local varieties are cultivated, such as Kydonitsa, Petroulianos, Asproudi, Thrapsa, Mavroudi, Monemvasia, Smyrneiko, Roditis, Mantilaria, as well as Asyrtiko, Aidani, Atheri, Agiorgitiko and Malagouzia. Furthermore, the noble foreign varieties, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Cabernet and Merlot.
