Vytina, built on the slopes of Mount Mainalo, is a popular tourist destination for many years. When you arrive, head for the beautiful main square (K. Paparigopoulou) to enjoy coffee or lunch. The imposing Agios Tryfonas church, which dates from 1846, is dedicated to the saint who was believed to have saved Vytina from a plague.
From here you are within easy walking distance of the Folklore Museum, the Town Hall, the main street with all the shops selling local products and souvenirs, the guesthouses, tavernas, and cafes. You’ll be tempted by the fragrance of freshly baked sourdough bread from the old bakery nearby, so why not pop in and grab yourself a treat?
What to see in Vytina
The Triantafylidis Forestry School is a two-story neoclassical building (1890-95) set in a 150-acre farm. It was donated by Panagiotis Triantafylidis.
The famous Vytina grove, with a variety of trees including pines, firs, maples and acacias, was originally created as an experimental wood during the Occupation and makes for a lovely walk.
If you’re feeling romantic you can walk along the "Street of Love", where the young people of the village used to gather in the hope of meeting a partner.
The Folklore Museum will give you an idea of how daily life and work used to be in the old days.
The Public Library, one of the oldest of its kind in Greece, is also full of informative material about Vytina and the nearby villages and monuments (tel. 27950 22017).
You can take a beautiful stroll to Palia (or Kato) Vytina where 400 families lived at one time, but left after being driven out by the Turks.
The tavernas of Vytina serve delicious traditional cuisine (including salted pork, rooster with hand-made pasta, wild boar, etc.), but there are also restaurants with a modern take on local cuisine. The village has also plenty modern coffee-bars and shops selling local products such as honey, cheeses, herbs, handmade pasta, wood carvings, etc.
Where to go hiking. Section 5 of the menalontrail network of paths connects Vytina with Nymfasia. Section 4 connects Elati with Vytina.
