The modern town is an agricultural and commercial centre for the entire region, but is still inextricably linked to the great archaeological site and museum of Ancient Messina which is 20 km from the modern city. Modern Messini is built on the west bank of the Pamisos river and is 10 km from Kalamata. You can relax in the central park with its shady trees, water fountains and old clock or take a wander around the restaurants, cafes and shops. If you are looking for a dose of culture, head to the "Taki Katsoulidis" engraving museum which was founded in 2002. The artist donated 200 engravings, 20 paintings, a 19th century lithography press and various other items which are displayed here. The museum also ogranises events and temporary exhibitions. Or if you feel like some beach therapy, the local Bouka beach is a lovely long sandy stretch which has been given a Blue Flag award. It’s 4km from the town, and has good facilities as well as areas without bars etc.
Now for some history. The name Messini comes from the ancient city which was named in honour of the first mythical queen of Messinia. In 1205, when the Franks on the 4th Crusade arrived they found the area flooded by the waters of the Pamisos and called area “ille” ("island"), a nickname which is still used by the older people to this day.
In May 1770, the failed Orlov Revolt which attempted to throw off Turkish rule came to an end here and heroes of the revolt were buried in the ruins of a Frankish tower at Panigiristra, Once Greece became independent, Messini continued to thrive. While many other rural towns and villages suffered from depopulation as people moved to the cities, the population of Messini actually increased thanks to the fertile plain surrounding it and the increased olive oil, potatoes, figs, cheese and wine production. Another interesting fact is that the rice has been grown in the area since ancient times, using the water from the Pamisos river.
Events. The Messini carnival has been a big event for many, many years. It culminates with the hanging of "the old woman Sykos" (a tradition whose roots are unclear) and the carnival parade. A major festival and fair which lasts for 9 days is organised in Messina every September from the 20th of the month. The procession carrying the icon of the Virgin Mary that comes down from Vulkanou Monastery in Ithomi is a highlight of this festival.
