The Collection of Greek Costumes "Victoria G. Karelia" welcomes a unique exhibition entitled "From Dawn to Myrtis and from Myrtis to today: clothes tell a story". The two famous "daughters", Avgi, a Mesolithic woman of 7000 BC from Theopetra in Kalambaka, and Myrtis, a young girl from Athens of 430 BC, meet for the first time in the exhibition space of the Collection, bringing 9,000 years of costume history to life.
Dawn and Myrtis, whose garments were curated respectively by the costume designer Yannis Metzikov and the designer Sofia Kokossalaki, take their place among the garments of the Collection, attempting to shed light on the gradual transformation of clothing from a tool of survival to a means of expressing internal processes and a carrier of complex social messages. Being two fixed points of reference through time, they become the occasion for an interesting discussion about the primary role of clothing in prehistoric times and its evolution in historical times based on the available raw materials, the productive potential and the social ties of people within their living conditions.
At the same time, Dawn and Myrtis inspire a collective visual commentary that frames the respective exhibition. Twenty-one contemporary Greek artists respond to the invitation to create new works inspired by the archaeological finds of Dawn and Myrtis. The artists are: Olga-Maria Anghe.
The Victoria Karelias Collection Of Traditional Greek Costumes is located at 64 Stadiou Street, Kalamata. More information at tel. 27210 86923 and 27210 86927.
