The popular summer resort has developed its facilities and services in the areas of accommodation, catering and entertainment. The medieval castle by the port adds to its beauty. It is built on the so-called Nisi, the hill the settlement was named after, because it shape looks like a star (astros).
The fortress was built (or completed) in 1256 by prince William Villehardouin, who called it “Castello della estella. Many years later, it turned into a powerful defensive complex, which played an important role in military conflicts of the time. Greeks used it during the Ottoman Occupation. During the Greek Revolution, Zafeiropoulos brothers, rich merchants from abroad, decided to return to their homeland and take part in the struggle for the liberation of Greece. They settled in the castle, repaired it and built there their three residences.
Nowadays, what has been preserved of the castle is part of the bailey and one of the towers. Ruins of the Zafeiropoulos residences have also been preserved. It is open to visitors all year round. It is surrounded by stone-built houses of the traditional part of coastal Astros, and the view from the hilltop is panoramic.
The beaches located in the settlement are Atsinganos to the north, with shallow waters, sand and fine pebbles, and Callisto, with sunbeds and umbrellas and all facilities of the village above. At a distance of 2 km, you’ll find Portes, a fully organised beach, ideal for windsurfing.
