Historical village, near ancient Epidaurus, with beautiful beaches, nice tavernas and many opportunities for excursions to nearby attractions and water sports.
The village was initially called Piada and it is the result of the evolution of the medieval settlement. It lies near the archaeological site of Epidaurus and its upper neighbourhoods stretch over the slopes of Mount Akros. At its highest point, you’ll see the castle, presumably built in the Byzantine era and completed under Frankish and Venetian rule. The remainders of its walls are visible from the village. On the top -it’s totally worth climbing it to enjoy the panoramic view- there are some ruins and the Church of Saint John Theologos.
In December 1821, the first Greek national assembly started, which was completed on January 16 January 1822. The Assembly proclaimed the independence of the Greek nation, it adopted the Greek flag and the state’s first regime. It was then that the village was renamed New Epidaurus.
The sea lies 3 km away from the village. This is where the organised marina of the Municipality of Epidaurus is located. You’ll go for a swim at the oblong Aliotou beach, which is sandy with pebbles, partly organised, with beach bars and restaurants. Piliostasi is another beach of New Epidaurus.
Nearby sights are Agnountos Monastery, Taxiarhon Monastery of the 15th century and Panagia Polemarcha (Warrior): It was founded in the early 15th century by a monk and eremite called Antonios, who came from Agnountos Monastery, and it was later deserted because of pirate raids. It’s worth visiting it, in order to admire the catholicon, which is built based on the three-aisled basilica type. Near Polemarcha, there are two other quiet beaches, surrounded by a pine tree forest.
Activities In the region of New Epidaurus, apart from other activities, such as water sports, cycling, scuba diving, it is worth trekking in the impressive Vothyla gorge. The circular route of 4 km, in a beautiful landscape with scattered water mills, starts at the First National Assembly Square in New Epidaurus.
