The traditional village of Zatouna is in the mountains of Arcadia, 1000m above sea level. It is far off the “tourist trail” and a visit here means a real break from the stresses of everyday life. You can look round the pretty village with its stone-built, folk architecture houses, many water fountains, beautiful views and an attractive central square shaded by plane trees.
For many Greeks, the village is inexorably linked to the great composer and activist Mikis Theodorakis who was exiled to the village by the Military Junta which ruled Greece from 1967 to 1974. The Theodorakis family stayed here from August 1968 to November 1969 and the old primary school building has been turned into a museum dedicated to the composer.
The village’s main period of prosperity was in the 17th century when it produced wool, silk, acorns and hides - for which it was well known. It was burned by Albanian allies of the Ottomans, but was later rebuilt. The two main churches are Panagia Elovitissa dating from 1853, and Agios Georgios with its stone bell tower which dates from 1843.
